Q&A with Sven Heutz

In what ways does Vibrant’z Pearls technology align revolutionize sustainable practices in the coatings industry and meet rising eco-conscious consumer expectations?
Pearls doesn’t contain any harmful ingredients such as humectants, biocides, preservatives, or disruptive additives. This allows paint manufacturers to offer products that meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly paints. The color is unaffected during production and during the tinting process at retail outlets. Consumer demand for emission-free paints is constantly growing.
How did sustainability principles shape the design and innovation process behind Pearls from concept to commercialization?
Within our current possibilities, we have strived at every stage of the production process to use our resources as effectively as possible. For example, materials which are out of spec are returned to the production process or used for other purposes. Packaging is made from 100% recycled materials or is 100% recyclable. Packaging is utilized as efficiently as possible during storage and shipping.
What are the most impactful insights from Pearls’ recent lifecycle analysis (LCA), and how do these findings differentiate it from traditional liquid tinting solutions?
The biggest influence on an LCA is the use of the ingredients. Keeping out certain chemical compounds has a significant impact on the GWP. This is only the difference in the product itself. Other visible benefits, such as less waste in the container or reduced service and maintenance requirements for the dosing system, also have a positive impact on an LCA.
How can Pearls advance to the corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals of coatings manufacturers and their customers?
The Pearls concept is clean and service-friendly. Employees in the tinting department, in production, or at the sales outlets experience less mess and less cleaning. Instead of lifting heavy paint cans or container onto the dispenser shelf, Pearls can be dosed into an intermediate container (cup). This container can be completely emptied into the paint bucket before it is placed in the mixer. While this does not affect the LCA, it does help the paint manufacturer protect employees.
What measurable environmental benefits can customers expect when switching to Pearls compared to conventional colorant systems?
Overall, from production to final application, Pearls technology is significantly more environmentally friendly than comparable traditional color systems. Colors can also be made with fewer ingredients, and paint labeling (CLP) can be simplified.
What’s next for Pearls in Vibrantz’s sustainability roadmap?
By building a large production facility and increasing production efficiency, we are significantly reducing energy consumption within production. We also focus on using sustainable energy in production while simultaneously reducing emissions. At the product level, we pay attention to selecting the right raw materials and packaging, ideally from sustainable sources, in the further development of new products.
