Agriculture

Agriculture has profoundly shaped our world. The rapid industrialization of the early 20th century brought step-change improvement to traditional farming methods. As agriculture became specialized and mechanized, its efficiency reduced and sometimes eliminated the need for farm laborers. Rural people migrated to urban areas to fill new factory jobs and the remaining farmers were responsible for supplying food to entire city populations.  Despite the critical role the agriculture and farming industries still play in our lives, the geographic distance separating this type of work from metropolitan areas can often mean it is overlooked or underappreciated.

Food literacy, or the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about food, remains a global issue affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. Research of consumers across 18 European countries found that only 53% of consumers have confidence in the safety of their food. Studies also indicate that roughly two-thirds of Generation Zs, born in the 1990s and early 2000s, and millennials are willing to pay more to purchase environmentally sustainable products. Food literacy has widespread consequences that shape trends and buying habits and impact global health and hunger.

According to The Centers for Disease Control, falls are the leading cause of injury among adults aged 65 and older in the United States, resulting in approximately 14 million incidents annually. And The World Health Organization concluded that 37.3 million falls were severe enough to require medical attention, making falls the second leading cause of unintentional deaths worldwide. Falls often lead to hospitalization, a shorter life span and loss of independence. They also impose significant financial burdens, costing the U.S. health care system $50 billion annually. The overwhelming impact of falls has led to global campaigns to prevent injuries in aging adults and raise awareness to reduce incidents.

Further, addressing fall prevention has become increasingly important due to the significant demographic shift in global aging populations. The United Nations forecasts that the number of people aged 65 or older worldwide will increase by 1.6 billion by 2050. Urban planners, builders and architects must also recognize the importance of “aging in place,” older adults’ preference to live independently in their homes or communities rather than relocating. Making accessibility part of building planning and design can support independent lives for older adults while tapping into a thriving consumer market.

In response to the demand for more accessible solutions, we developed a slip-resistant digital ink, a part of our SpectrumHD series, to enhance safety on interior and exterior glass surfaces. Food packaging ensures food safety and easy handling and transport by preventing chemical contamination and enhancing shelf life, ensuring consumer convenience. Yet as consumers become increasingly more health conscious, they are increasingly worried about harmful substances transferring from its packaging materials into the food we consume. These concerns have spurred the development of stricter regulations and the search for safer, non-toxic packaging materials that protect both the food and the consumer.

Recently, regulatory frameworks like The German Printing Ink Ordinance have become crucial drivers for innovation within the ink and packaging industry. These regulations are aimed at ensuring materials used in printing, particularly those with direct contact, meet stringent safety and sustainability standards. Europe remains at the forefront of this movement, mandating higher purity and safety levels for pigments used in food packaging and other sensitive applications. This push toward sustainability and safety has prompted significant advancements in the industry, leading to the development of innovative solutions that not only comply with these regulations but also enhance product performance.

Ensuring food safety with organic pigments

Organic azo pigments play a crucial role in the development of high-quality inks, particularly for applications involving direct and indirect food contact. These pigments offer the much sought-after color vibrancy, transparency, stability and gloss. The use of organic azo pigments however may result in inks containing harmful contaminants, such as primary aromatic amines (PAAs) that occur in azo pigments and potentially pose a health risk if they migrate into food from colored packaging and napkin materials. There is therefore a continuous drive to develop high-purity organic azo pigments for companies to produce and use inks that not only deliver superior visual appeal but also meet stringent regulatory requirements, reflecting a commitment to both consumer safety and environmental sustainability.

Vibrantz is a leading global supplier of specialty high-performing organic azo pigments that impart transparency and high tinting strength to establish the most vivid shades for inks applications, as well as high performance azo pigments for coatings and plastics.

Lysopure’s high chemical purity helps keep food packaging safe

In response to the increasingly stringent regulatory changes, Vibrantz launched Lysopure Yellow 1317C, an organic azo pigment with the highest purity profile available on the market, to minimize the risk of potential exposure to harmful substances. This globally available product is specifically designed for food and sensitive applications, ensuring it meets and exceeds the rigorous standards set by European authorities. The purity of Lysopure Yellow 1317C not only guarantees compliance with the German Printing Ink Ordinance but also assures customers of its safety and reliability for use in both direct and indirect food contact.

The range of pure pigments used in Lysopure is based on a strict selection of raw materials, advanced processing techniques and an internal quality control process performed on every batch. We check each batch for PAAs, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) in the final pigment. Also, Vibrantz validates in-house its novel products internally for regulation compliancy by quantifying the amount of trace impurities transferred into the food via dedicated food-contact simulation tests (e.g. EN 645) and quantification by high-tech equipment. The Lysopure range is therefore ideal for use in tissue ink and bakery paper and can be used in various ink applications where the purity profile is of concern, such as indirect and direct food contact packaging, non-woven materials and a series of plastic applications.

Superior performance with sustainability in mind

Lysopure Yellow 1317C is particularly recommended for multicolor printing processes such as CMYK, resulting in inks that produce stunning, true-to-life prints. This makes it an ideal choice for food packaging where visual appeal is crucial.

In addition to its superior color performance, Lysopure Yellow 1317C is designed with sustainability in mind. The pigment is derived from organic sources, aligning with the growing demand for eco-friendly products in the market. Its production process minimizes environmental impact, reflecting our commitment to sustainable practices. By choosing Lysopure Yellow 1317C, companies can not only improve the aesthetic quality of their packaging but also contribute to a more sustainable future.

As the industry continues to evolve under the influence of stringent regulations and growing consumer awareness, Vibrantz remains committed to push the boundaries of what is possible in ink and pigment technology. With its unparalleled purity, vibrant color performance and sustainable credentials, Lysopure Yellow 1317C is poised to make a significant impact on the ink and packaging industry.

Corporate

Whether we realize it, risk permeates almost every aspect of our daily lives. From the moment we turn on a kitchen oven or burner, use sharp objects or work at heights doing home projects, or get in a car or on public transport to go about our day: Our physical safety is at risk. And emotional safety is equally as important if we are to exercise the courage required to speak up to family or friends when something feels off in a conversation or situation. Similarly, safety is foundational in corporate environments, especially in manufacturing facilities. Truly, one of the most enduring and difficult challenges a business — and any leader — faces is how to make safety part of its cultural fabric and everyday operations to ensure employees get home safely every day. While there are countless systems, processes and tools to ensure safe manufacturing, the power of compassionate leaders who genuinely care about their people and invest in building a strong safety culture cannot be ignored.

Caring is the core of safety

The most dreaded call a leader in the manufacturing space can receive is that one of his or her employees has been injured — or, worse yet, killed — on the job. Every injury, in some way, is a failure on the part of leadership. And helping people get home safely requires a leadership component that is seldom talked about: Genuinely caring about others. Just as employees look forward to getting back home to their loved ones, they must also be led by a leader and work on a team that cares about their well-being. This understanding then drives each individual to act in ways that protect their own and others’ health and safety on the job.

Caring and safety impact desirable business outcomes

As the CEO at Vibrantz, I remind our employees often that if we are not world class in safety then we can never be our best as a company nor achieve our vision of becoming a world-class company. An organization led by managers who truly care and a workplace that takes safety seriously can positively impact key business outcomes. Gallup’s 2023 State of the Global Workplace Report shows employees who feel like someone cares for them are more likely to show care and respect for others, creating a safer work environment for the team. This is then a strong predictor of employee retention, safety, productivity and financial performance. Gallup’s 2020 meta-analysis of its Q12 inventory shows that corporate cultures in the top quartile of their database have 64% fewer incidents versus those with lower scores.

Media coverage of refinery operation explosions over the last some decades demonstrates the connection between caring and safety. Often cited as a key contributor to these sad and disastrous occurrences are poor safety cultures that ignore warning signs, allow or enable deficient safety management programs and/or accept the use of obsolete equipment. This “check the boxes” sort of mentality is the opposite of the care managers and leaders must demonstrate daily. And sadly, they ended in employee deaths and cost companies billions.

Strong safety systems are key

There is no “easy button” to push or single path to follow for a company to become world-class in safety. But leaders can impact safety performance with systems that make it hard for anyone to get hurt.

Safety systems can be implemented immediately to drive near-term improvement and include basics like the proper personal protective equipment required to do specific jobs, properly maintained capital equipment and tools, and agreed-upon safety rules the entire organization follows. Additionally, a focus on leading indicators like safety scorecards and spot audits by environmental health and safety leaders are powerful tools to help the organization identify and report potential hazards before they become an actual incident. This is where policy implementation can also play a key role. For example, when Vibrantz’s safety performance showed a majority of incidents over a period involved hand cuts and injuries, we implemented a cutting devices policy that helped us eliminate hand injuries caused by open blades for the remainder of the year. Throughout 2023, we invested over $3.7 million in 3,400 projects to improve machine guarding to make it that much harder for any employee to get injured.

The power of employee observations in daily work can also not be understated. We rely on employees to constantly be aware of work surroundings and notify managers of where improvements can be made. At Vibrantz, we regularly share the positive impacts of employee observations in improving safety. One employee noticed condensation droplets falling from a cold-water pipe, creating a slip hazard, and informed management so the pipes could be insulated. Another employee worked with a supplier to adjust how high they were stacking pallets so unloading was less risky for people. We also saw employees going up and down a main, wide staircase without holding one of the left or right handrails, so a center rail was installed to encourage its use. All of these seem small…until they result in injury.

Safety culture cannot be understated

Building a safety mindset from the inside out is long-game work but equally as important as systems. Ultimately, leaders must weave safety into the organization’s fabric such that it is a core value — in word and deed — and exhibited in a way such that employees speak up when they see something perceived as unsafe. This is where emotional safety becomes critical. Take the employee who may notice a friend at work who appears sleepy driving a forklift but chooses not to say anything to that friend or her supervisor. Often, this unwillingness to speak up is driven by an environment that has caused a perception that people will be punished or penalized if they say something.

Culture is also heavily impacted by seemingly simple actions like leaders making safety the first item on every morning’s agenda, walking around the shop floor each day to speak to employees and observe processes, and framing “speaking up” as the truest form of demonstrating care for one another. At Vibrantz, our employees often hear us say they have not only the right, but the responsibility, to stop work if they see something unsafe. We continue to communicate that nothing employees do each day is worth them getting hurt. Vibrantz launched a safety challenge in May and June 2024, wherein over 95% of sites had zero recordables in May, and we are working toward 100% in June.

Safety really can work from the inside out

One of the most unexpected and memorable interactions I had in 2023 occurred shortly after Vibrantz implemented our cutting devices policy. While visiting one of our manufacturing sites, an employee shared that she had also encouraged her family to remove any unnecessary open blades at home where it made sense and gave opening packages in the mail as one example. That conversation is the epitome of what can happen when an organization commits to improving and leading safety through systems and culture in ways that also drive engagement, business results and accountability. The more our leaders care, the safer our companies can become, and the more parents, siblings and spouses get home to those who need them most.

Enamels, Glass

Shaping a bright future

27 March 2024 3 mins

In 2023, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration reported the warmest year on record, and forecasts indicate that 2024 will follow this trend. Despite growing climate concerns, there is optimism surrounding efforts to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Global renewable energy capacity surged by nearly 50% last year, with solar photovoltaic (PV) implementation leading the charge, particularly in China.

In an effort to combat rising GHG emissions that result in environmental challenges like heat waves, heavy rainfall and coastal flooding, societies and governments are increasingly investing in renewable energy and alternative energy infrastructure. This momentum has sparked innovation in the glass coatings industry, aimed at creating durable solar panels, greener buildings and sustainable transportation solutions. For over 100 years, Vibrantz has supplied the consumer and industrial manufacturing markets with sustainable solutions for glass coatings.

Vibrantz engineers coatings to withstand the elements

The expansion of the alternative energy market has prompted efforts to enhance the efficiency and durability of glass. Vibrantz engineers enamel coatings and ceramic digital inks for glass, offering an array of functional benefits like impact-protectant surfaces, non-stick properties and near-invisible coating to enhance durability while allowing light transfer.

Some of our key products include:

  • 99% solar white enamel for screen printing onto solar glass
  • Digital ceramic inkjet printing inks for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV)
  • Traditional and digital ceramic inks that offer chemical and weather resistance, ultra-violet (UV) stability and scratch protection for architectural and construction glass
  • Enamels and digital inks with enhanced durability and UV protection for transportation and automotive glass

The charge toward solar

As the demand for solar panels continues to rise, they are being incorporated into a wide range of structures beyond traditional rooftops including parking garages, sports facilities and agricultural facilities. To meet this growing need, Vibrantz provides specialized inks that enhance structural strength, offer UV protection, ensure weather resistance and more.

For example, our 99% solar white enamel is screen printed onto laminated glass, improving panel battery life and power-generating efficiency. To further bolster the panel, solar white enamel increases reflectivity and acid resistance, while reducing enamel breakdown. This allows the battery to collect more sunlight and enhances overall performance.

Eco-awareness by solar can also be achieved alongside aesthetic benefits. BIPV offers a middle ground facilitated by our digital ceramic inks, utilizing images of traditional roofing materials, such as asphalt shingles or terra cotta, printed onto solar modules and enables high light transmittance. Additionally, our inks replicate the appearance of wall claddings by digitally printing images of materials like brick or cedar onto solar glass.

Electronics

Working to combat climate change is often associated with solutions like recycling plastic bottles, repurposing glass jars for food storage or reducing disposable utensil use. However, there exist additional and simple changes that each of us can make in our day to day at home, such as how we dry clothes, cook food or power our appliances. Approximately 20% of energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from heating, cooling and powering households in the United States.

Recognizing this, climate experts have diligently provided resources and education to help individuals make micro-level changes, such as electrifying stoves, using induction cooktops or producing more efficient consumer electronics. Government-backed organizations, administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or the U.S. Department of Energy, for example, offer guidance on finding energy-efficient appliances and accessing government tax credits for greener purchases. Similarly, non-profit organizations worldwide exist to partner with families and businesses to provide simple and credible information that consumers can rely on to make well-informed climate-aligned decisions and receive incentives for home efficiencies and electrification.

The push toward electrification is gaining momentum globally as advanced economies around the world  embrace the urgency of addressing climate change. Whether one rents an apartment, owns a home or lives in a recreational vehicle, upgrades to electronics and lifestyle adjustments can significantly contribute to solving the larger climate challenge. By adopting simple yet practical changes like using an electric kettle instead of a gas stove or upgrading to a more efficient water heater, individuals can reduce their carbon footprint and save on energy bills.

Building & Construction, Paints and coatings

The use of air conditioning (AC) for residential and commercial use is increasingly common, especially in the world’s hotter regions, putting enormous strain on electricity. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), cooling is the fastest growing use of energy in buildings, with the global demand expected to triple by 2050, presenting significant challenges for energy sustainability, accessibility and affordability.

Architects, builders and urban planners seek eco-friendly solutions that address the escalating demand for cooling while mitigating the environmental impact of traditional approaches. Innovative technologies like near infrared (NIR) reflective pigments and dispersions, or “cool colors,” are increasingly utilized in building and construction design to significantly reduce the amount of heat absorbed by structures, lessening the reliance on AC systems.

Sustainable solutions for urban living

By mitigating the absorption of solar radiation in comparison with other pigments in same color space, these colors reduce the impact of the urban heat island effect, a phenomenon where urban areas experience higher temperatures than surrounding rural areas. The vast expanses of concrete, asphalt and other heat-absorbing dark surfaces prevalent in cities primarily cause this effect. This excess heat can lead to various issues, including increased energy consumption for cooling, elevated air pollution levels and discomfort for residents.

Incorporating cool colors into building exteriors and urban infrastructure can help create a more comfortable and healthier urban environment for residents. Additionally, cooler surfaces can help lower AC demands, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy production. As cities grapple with rising temperatures and the challenges of climate change, integrating cool colors into urban landscapes is a simple yet impactful strategy to enhance sustainability and resilience.

Achieve cooler temperatures without compromising aesthetics or performance

Beyond energy efficiency, cool colors also improve the durability of exterior coatings in buildings, roofs, pavement and cement. Enhanced protection against thermal stress ensures building and construction materials maintain their aesthetic appeal for over time, reducing the need for frequent maintenance. This translates into cost savings and a longer life span for building exteriors and materials, aligning with the growing demand for sustainable building practices.

At the core of cool colors are NIR pigments and dispersions designed to reflect a higher percentage of sunlight compared to traditional coatings. This innovative approach to color science maximizes energy efficiency and empowers architects and designers with a wide range of design possibilities.

Home furnishing and appliances

As the demand for clean and conscious living continues to grow, the culinary landscape is transforming to offer cookware that aligns with consumers’ commitments to cleanliness and well-being. Particularly important, attention continues to be paid to the hazards of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), known as “forever chemicals” used to make nonstick cookware surfaces, among countless other applications. As such, the culinary market is flooded with cookware options and marketing claims that promise nonstick surfaces, nontoxic coating and eco-friendly design, making it hard for consumers to discern truly safe and reliable product choices.

The porcelain enamel difference

Genuine porcelain enamel, a form of ceramic coating, has been a staple of the kitchen industry for decades. It resists corrosion from household cleaners, abrasion and the wear and tear of daily handling.

Genuine porcelain enamel differs from the heavily promoted and advertised “ceramic-coated” cookware because it is derived from naturally occurring raw minerals such as clay and rock. Cookware with product claims of being ceramic-coated or mineral based are often painted with high-temperature solvent-containing finishes. This coating has a significantly shorter life span than porcelain enamel and may need to be disposed of as early as three years after purchase.

“Genuine porcelain enamel ceramic coatings have been used since the 19th century and with proper care and maintenance, will last for generations. We offer products that not only enrich everyday life, but also provide an exceptionally durable cookware finish that is a safe and made without PFAS.”

Ana Ligia Manzano, Business Manager Mexico Performance Enamel, Ceramics and Color Solutions

Our porcelain enamels contribute to clean cookware that performs

Vibrantz offers safe porcelain enamel coatings made without lead and PFAS. Several of our existing products such our matte black and creamy white porcelain enamels for cast iron cookware satisfy European food contact tests and comply with ISO 4531 which assesses harmful chemicals’ migration from cookware to food.

The drive toward zero emissions

17 December 2023 3 mins

Recent government initiatives to halt climate change, like the EV Acceleration Challenge in the U.S., which aligns with the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022 and Europe’s Clean Vehicles Directive, continue to impact vehicle electrification. Legislations like these are encouraging the manufacturing of cleaner vehicles around the world.

We often hear about the environmental benefits of electric vehicles (EVs) and appreciate their modern features. But what lies behind the seamless driving experience drawing consumers to purchase EVs?

While vehicles today showcase a range of technological advancement driven by sensors, EVs heavily rely on sensors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide a luxury experience.

A closer look at EV sensors

EV sensors require capacitors to store energy passively until it is released on demand, ensuring a responsive power source for the intricate functionalities of EV systems.

A capacitor is composed of dielectric material sandwiched between two conductive plates. The dielectric material is an insulator that enhances capacitance and prevents the free flow of charges, ensuring that the stored energy remains stable and controlled. This neutralization enables efficient energy storage and plays a vital role in successful capacitor operation.

Our purpose-driven path

17 December 2023 4 mins

At Vibrantz, our purpose is to bring color, performance and vibrancy to life in all we do. And we speak often about the importance of finding ways – each day – to help connect our people to this purpose. What I find most encouraging is that our vision and purpose are becoming part of the fabric of who we are as an employer of bright and passionate colleagues around the world, a provider of hundreds of technologies for customers, a responsible and caring steward in our communities, and so much more.

As Randy Pausch, renowned for his wisdom in The Last Lecture, once expressed, “When we’re connected to others, we become better people.” In other words, when people realize their unique contribution to furthering a goal, then true ownership emerges. At the core of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) – or sustainability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) – efforts is a powerful shared belief that we are the best versions of ourselves when we are connected to and positively impacting others. We recognize the synergistic effects of dedicating a balanced focus to our stakeholders. We hold one another accountable for making decisions and fulfilling commitments in ways that consider more than financial gain.

Vibrantz’s CSR Council is a powerful example of this data in real life.

Our CSR journey

As we began to lay the foundation for our CSR program, the Vibrantz team was fueled by the powerful shared belief that we are the best versions of ourselves when we are positively impacting others. Personally, leaving people and projects better than I found them is a big “why” for me. The chance to guide Vibrantz’s impact on the world through the establishment of our CSR Council has felt like an extension of this “Why” and been something I’ve looked forward to each day.

Much like me, our Council subcommittee leads raised their hands asking to help champion some facet of our CSR program, whether it be environmental, health and safety, stakeholder impact, sustainable procurement, or product management. In 2024, the team’s incredible efforts over the short span of roughly a year and a half together will culminate in Vibrantz’s first CSR Report.

“Vibrantz has empowered us to foster a positive impact on investors, employees, the environment and society at large. Through collaborative teamwork and our diverse experiences, responsibilities and regions, we are shaping the future of our company in an exceptional way.”

Antonio Piñeiro, Quality, Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability, EMEA

As expected, the report will include an overview of our CSR journey, improvements and impacts across our sustainability focus areas. But the often hard-to-quantify and difficult-to-achieve driving force behind the body of work is our Council members’ personal connections to Vibrantz’s purpose and the importance of sustainability in our everyday lives.

“My role on the Council involves collecting global environment and energy data, which has given me the opportunity to engage with colleagues across diverse business units, facilities and regions and exchange insights on sustainability initiatives. Their inputs are invaluable in helping to advance our aspirational CSR program.”

Qian Shen, Director Environment, Health and Safety, APAC

Our commitment to CSR is just one of the ways Vibrantz is dedicated to shaping a future as an enduring world-class specialty chemicals and materials solutions provider. Along this journey, we continue to listen, learn and value diverse perspectives from a global team who is increasingly proud to share their unique contributions and be part of the shared Vibrantz experience as we work to make life more vibrant.

Plastics

Companies often use color in product packaging to distinguish and elevate their brands. Amid the kaleidoscope to choose from, the world of packaging has progressively embraced the allure of black and darker colors. Black has become a statement for brand packaging because it is often associated with elegance, luxury and high quality; can represent modernity and timelessness; provides contrast on store shelves to attract attention; and can help block out light and protect products.

Beyond the allure of black in packaging, particularly plastic packaging, it can create difficulties when recycling. Modern plastic recycling operations utilize near infrared (NIR) technology in their processing equipment to sort materials efficiently. Under such conditions, plastics colored with traditional carbon black pigment are largely undetectable, causing plastics that could and should be recycled to be unnecessarily discarded, contributing to landfill waste. This issue also affects other dark colors that utilize carbon black at low dosages, like dark blues, greens, browns and reds.

The need for enhanced plastic recycling

With environmental consciousness at the forefront of global discourse, the need for sustainable solutions to address plastic pollution is undeniable. Plastics alone contribute significantly to environmental degradation, with an estimated 14 million metric tons entering oceans annually.

As consumers and brands commit to more sustainable practices, packaging producers are increasingly considering a variety of solutions to support the recyclability of dark plastics including:

  • Converting packaging material to a nonplastic, typically contributing to an increase in cost.
  • Altering color of packaging, which can negatively impact brand identity.
  • Incorporating an innovative technology, like near-infrared (NIR) reflecting pigments, to encourage recyclability and enhance efficiency.

NIR reflecting pigments pave the way for a more circular plastic economy

NIR pigments are engineered to reflect near-infrared light, making it easier for automated sorting systems to distinguish between various types of plastics during recycling.

Key advantages of NIR pigments include:

  • Improved sorting accuracy: Enhances the accuracy of sorting processes in recycling facilities. Automated sorting systems equipped with NIR technology can efficiently identify and separate plastics based on their reflective properties.
  • Increased recycling rates: Improved accuracy in plastic sorting can help increase recycling rates by reducing contamination.
  • Cost-effective recycling: NIR reflecting pigments aid automation in sorting processes so recycling facilities can streamline their operations and optimize resources.
  • Environmental impact: More effective and accurate recycling through the use of NIR reflecting pigments has the potential to be a reliable contributor to overall plastic pollution reduction.

Vibrantz helps improve the recycling of dark plastics

We are the leading global supplier of inorganic pigments and provide NIR-detectable black pigments for dark plastic recycling that meet food contact regulations.

Our flagship NIR reflecting product Nubifer® NB-803K FCP (pigment black 33) is a moderate NIR reflecting black with low magnetism, improving color strength and sort-ability. Nubifer NB-803K FCP is also FDA and EU 10/2011 compliant, allowing the product to be used on plastics in contact with food.

We also offer a Nubifer 24-3950 FCP (pigment brown 29), which is an NIR reflecting FDA-approved pigment that enhances shade intensity without losing opacity. Contact us to learn more about our expanded portfolio of pigments.

Water as a clear priority

25 October 2023 4 mins

In a world offering constant entertainment and stimulation, we are oversaturated with noise, technology and distractions. Life can feel as if it flies by so quickly that we can often forget to appreciate unsung luxuries like a refreshing shower, a great swim in the pool, or a cool drink of fresh water.

In fact, clean water is one of the lifelines that sustains us, whether keeping us hydrated after a run or irrigating crops that eventually make their way to our dinner tables. Simply put, water is a vital resource necessary for our well-being. At Vibrantz, our advanced mineral technologies uniquely position us to impact how we have access to and can enjoy clean water.

Challenges informed by source material

Typically, drinking water starts its journey from lakes, rivers and groundwater. From these sources, it flows to intake points, treatment plants and storage tanks. It undergoes several critical processes during treatment, including coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection.

The presence of manganese and iron in groundwater and the need to remove them are significant challenges the water industry encounters. An even larger concern is the presence of arsenic in water. With a health impact greater than iron and manganese, arsenic can cause chronic illness even in low concentrations.

Our high-performance manganese dioxide (MnO2) filter media, sold under the Pyrolox® brand name, plays an integral role in removing these harmful metals and pollutants.

MnOfiltration media is effective for water purification in the following ways:

  • Oxidation of manganese and iron Iron and manganese removal ensures that water is clear and free from staining, discoloration and plugging up of lines.
  • Adsorption of impurities – Manganese can adsorb or trap impurities and contaminants such as viruses, bacteria, chemicals and parasites.
  • Catalytic action – Manganese is used as a catalyst for chemical reactions like oxidation and precipitation. These reactions remove contaminants like iron, manganese, arsenic and hydrogen sulfide pollutants from contaminated water.

We offer a comprehensive portfolio of MnO2 filter media products for private, industrial and municipal applications. Our advanced materials team works with water treatment plants and irrigation managers responsible for promoting healthy crop growth and yield maximization.

Agricultural technology (AgTech) is fusing agriculture and technology

Electronics

The electronics market has undergone a rather extraordinary transformation in the last few decades, driven by rapid technological advancements and increasing integration of electronics into our daily routines. Our personal computers, mobile devices, smart home technologies, wearables and connected vehicles are almost necessities in our everyday lives.

Surface polishing’s critical role in electronics manufacturing

Precision is paramount in the dynamic world of electronics manufacturing. Whether it’s the intricate components of a computer chip or the cutting-edge technology in electric vehicles (EVs), achieving a flawlessly smooth surface is a crucial step. As electronics have evolved – shrinking in size while expanding in functionality – the need for precise surface polishing and chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) processes have become increasingly important.

CMP, a process utilizing specialized slurries to blend mechanical abrasion with chemical reactions to make surfaces perfectly flat and uniform, plays a pivotal role in guaranteeing the seamless functionality and reliability of electronic devices.

Slurries serve a dual purpose in CMP

Slurries play a key role in creating high-quality semiconductor devices with flat and smooth surfaces, which are essential for proper device performance and reliability. They are an essential part of the CMP process providing:

  • Material removal: The abrasive particles in slurries act as a microscopic sandpaper, gently wearing down uneven or excess material from the surface of the electronic component.
  • Chemical control: The chemicals in slurries are crucial in controlling the chemical reactions that take place during CMP. These reactions help in selectively removing specific materials while preserving others. This recision is vital to the integrity of the component’s functionality.

Customized CMP solutions

At Vibrantz, we recognize there is not a one-size-fits-all solution for electronics manufacturers. Our technical team collaborates with customers to reformulate and optimize slurry solutions. Our CMP slurries enable high-yield processes for next-generation devices, offering properties like better polishing capability, low defectivity, excellent stability and extended shelf life. We also work with customers to design custom polishing products with tailored properties required for increasingly complex CMP process requirements. Our entire production process is in-house, allowing us to have full technical and quality control of our products.

With two fully staffed CMP R&D teams, Vibrantz is pushing past barriers through innovative product development in the fast-growing silicon carbide (SIC) and colloidal ceria markets. With pioneering SIC slurry products developed in facilities around the world, Vibrantz is considered an industry leader in SIC advancement. Our technologies offer optimal performance while keeping cost and product yield as a top priority. As the semiconductor industry advances and devices become more complex, the importance of CMP in achieving high-quality electronic devices continues to grow. Health and personal care

High-quality fillings are essential for a healthy smile. They restore teeth affected by decay or damage and help prevent future oral health issues. As the dental industry continues to prioritize patient-centered care, the use of traditional silver amalgam fillings has decreased. In its place, the adoption of more aesthetically pleasing and safer alternative materials – like specialty glass – are growing.

Fusing innovation and patient-centered care

Although amalgam was known to be effective and affordable, one of its main disadvantages – among others – was an unaesthetic dark color that made the material less popular. Silica cement did not have this dark color but disintegrated much faster. Unfilled resins that were introduced in the 1950s had a natural appearance but lacked the ability to withstand the high biting forces of molar teeth, allowing them only to be used for front teeth. Additionally, resins tended to crack easily.

The introduction of composites in the 1970s resulted in improved surface hardness, highly aesthetic appearance and good wear resistance. Over the years, composites have improved further and now:

  • Closely match the appearance of natural teeth
  • Have improved surface hardness
  • Provide good wear resistance
  • Enable better detection of fillings in X-rays

Our specialty glass materials improve oral health

For over two decades, Vibrantz has supplied fine and ultrafine inert glass powders and bioactive glass to satisfy the demanding aesthetic and performance needs of the dental industry. Our high-strength, ultrafine inert glass powders help composites last longer and are easily dispersible, improving polishing capabilities.

Alternatively, our phosphate-based bioactive glass materials are designed to interact chemically with the teeth’s surface. Bioactive glass is used in specific toothpastes to provide characteristics like remineralization, desensitization, antibacterial effects and biofilm removal.

As we continue to collaborate with customers, we can solve our customers’ toughest challenges:

  • We produce ultrapure inert glass powder at scale
  • We offer a surface treatment process that yields composite material that is stronger and shrinks less when cured
  • We supply high-purity color stains designed for use in dental ceramics
  • We are co-innovating customized glass to meet demanding specifications

It’s about the journey

28 July 2023 4 mins

You’ve heard us say often that Vibrantz is on an incredible journey. A journey to build an enduring and sustainable world-class specialty chemicals and materials company that our employees believe is a safe and great workplace, makes a favorable impact on the planet and creates value for stakeholders.

We haven’t plugged our destination coordinates into a mapping app or given the address to a ride share driver as we sit idly waiting to get to the other side. On the contrary, the Vibrantz experience just over one year in is an exciting road trip where – day in and day out – our leaders and 5,000 employees are hyper focused on the steps required to keep serving our 11,000 customers while integrating, innovating and navigating today’s dynamic economic landscape.

It’s fitting, then, that this month our blog stories focus on Vibrantz’s impact in automotive applications. In other words, we’re featuring just a few of the ways that our journey is positively impacting yours.

Weekly, the media is awash with stories featuring transportation trends. Regardless of the extent and rate at which cars and trucks are electrified, automated or used as a service, getting from point A to B in a private vehicle is something the world is rather attached to. According to Statista, private vehicle travel today is preferred by almost two times that of public transport.

It’s easy to assume the role of a chemicals and materials company in the automotive space is solely in the raw input materials used to make vehicle batteries. But for decades, Vibrantz’s advanced materials, color solutions and performance coatings have played a leading role in making vehicles safer, stand-out, more efficient and – also critical – that support the global shift to produce greener cars and trucks. Whether it’s our abrasives for brake pads, frits and glazes for taillight sensors, tanning agents, colorants and pigments for vehicle interiors, or glass enamels for windshields – Vibrantz scientists obsess over daily commute details so drivers don’t have to.

But that’s not even the best part. Our manufacturing employees also take great pride in being an important part of the vehicles driving on roads worldwide. When asked about his work at our Villagran, Mexico, facility, Guadalupe Garcia, an R&D pigments chemist said:

“I love working on products like our reflective pigments that enable cooler surfaces on cars. We really are working on solving the biggest challenges and demands of today’s market.”

Cuauhtemoc Rosas, the glass plant manager in Villagran, also shared:

“The Vibrantz purpose, vision and values – particularly safety – guide our behavior and are manifested in the products we make. Like the automotive pastes that enable windshield safety. It’s awesome seeing how our efforts are part the bigger team bringing these solutions to life.”

And while we’re proud of our impact on vehicles to date, our sights are also set further down the highway as the landscape evolves to include more hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs). We recently announced the construction of a pilot project that will process high-purity manganese sulfate (HPMSM) used in batteries as original equipment manufacturers prioritize the production of zero-emission vehicles. Over the next three years, this expansion is anticipated to increase our HPMSM capacity to a level that could help power two million EVs as we provide an additional manganese sulfate alternative for the battery market serving EVs.

If you’re not yet following us on LinkedIn or X, formerly known as Twitter, I invite you to do so. If you’d like to learn about the fascinating science helping elevate everyday products, subscribe to our Vibrantz Edge blog.

If nothing else, enjoy a little “Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac as you commute and journey through this month’s stories with us.

Thermosets

As governments around the world implement stricter regulations to reduce emissions and promote sustainable transportation solutions, automakers are compelled to explore lightweight materials like thermoset composites to meet these requirements. From reducing vehicle mass and boosting driving performance, to allowing design freedom through more flexible materials, composites help designers build high-performing products more efficiently. Additionally, these composites are often more cost effective and easier to manufacture alternatives than traditional materials.

Exceptional durability is key for automotive components so producers often rely on sheet molding compounds (SMCs). SMCs are ready-to-mold, glass-reinforced polyester materials used in compression molding processes to achieve special characteristics. The prominence of SMCs in the automotive industry surged in the 1970s as automakers sought lightweight alternatives to traditional metals for body panels. Over time, ongoing advancements in material formulations and manufacturing processes have broadened SMC usage, making it a popular choice for numerous automotive components, including body panels, bumpers, structural parts and even truck beds.

The shift toward SMC technology in automobiles

The use of composites in the automotive industry is driven by several factors.

  • Weight reduction: One of the most critical advantages of composites is their lightweight nature. By incorporating composite materials into vehicle design, automakers can reduce the overall weight of the vehicle. Lighter vehicles tend to be more fuel-efficient and emit fewer greenhouse gases, contributing to better fuel economy and reduced environmental impact.
  • Performance improvement: Composites provide excellent mechanical properties, such as high strength and stiffness, enabling them to enhance the performance and safety of automotive components. This includes improving crash resistance, impact absorption and overall durability.
  • Design flexibility: Composites can be molded into complex shapes, offering automotive designers more freedom in creating innovative and aerodynamic vehicle designs. This flexibility allows for improved aesthetics and better integration of functional features.
  • Corrosion resistance: Composites are generally resistant to corrosion and rust, providing longer lifespan and reduced maintenance requirements for automotive components, particularly in extreme temperatures.

Helping customers win with UV stable technologies

Ultraviolet (UV) stability is crucial in automotive applications because constant exposure to sunlight can cause unprotected composites to degrade and lose their structural integrity over time. Within months of outdoor exposure, chalking can occur, fiberglass becomes exposed, and the part becomes visually and structurally damaged.

Through years of investment and research into UV stabilization science and decades of experience in composites, Vibrantz created UVSolutions® technology to provide maximum UV protection, resin system specification, pigment chemistry and color space. UVSolutions provides the industry’s best weathering performance in fiber-reinforced plastics and has gained prominence in composite applications for truck beds and tailgates.

“Our goal is to help our customers win in the market. UVSolutions enhance our customers’ SMC technologies and enable them to replace traditional metal materials on vehicle exteriors.”

Chris Reding, Sales Director, Color Solutions, Americas

Vibrantz UVSolutions technology, along with other raw materials, enables customers to win in the automotive market where composite technologies were traditionally overlooked. The trend of UV-stable composite technology in automobiles is driven by the automotive industry’s desire to reduce weight and improve fuel performance. As advancements in material science and manufacturing processes continue, we can expect to see more widespread adoption of UV-stable composites in various automotive applications.

Batteries

As governments worldwide promote electric vehicle (EV) adoption through incentives and stricter emission regulations, the demand for high-performance and sustainable battery technologies is growing. Automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are facing a significant challenge in meeting the surging demand due to the limited supply of batteries and critical materials essential for EV production. Lithium-ion batteries, powered by advanced components like high-purity manganese sulfate (HPMSM), have become the preferred choice for EV manufacturers due to their exceptional performance, safety and affordability.

The manganese advantage in lithium-ion batteries

Utilized as a raw material to produce cathode active materials, lithium-ion batteries using manganese-based cathodes offer several advantages. They enhance safety, promote longevity and provide thermal stability, making them an ideal choice for EV batteries. Manganese-containing cathodes contribute to cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability of lithium-ion batteries. Manganese ore production and reserves are vast and HPMSM prices are low relative to nickel, cobalt and lithium. Although battery-grade manganese processing does not require new mining capacity, scale-up time is can average two to four years.

Bridging the gap in EV battery supply

To enable the widespread adoption of EV battery technology, ensuring a stable supply chain of high-purity manganese is crucial. A dependable supply chain impacts battery production, EV manufacturing and the overall transition towards cleaner energy solutions. Vibrantz already manufactures various manganese chemicals at scale and produces HPMSM at its facility in Saint-Ghislain, Belgium.

We recently announced we are embarking on a three-year journey beginning with the construction of a pilot project at our Tampico, Mexico, facility that will enable the production of up to 45,000 metric tons per year of HPMSM which could help power roughly two million EVs. This new HPMSM capacity is expected to be operational in 2026.  The expanded Mexican site, together with the existing plant in Belgium, is expected to provide two reliable HPMSM sources for the lithium-ion battery market.

“With our extensive experience of more than a decade in high-purity manganese sulfate production and over 50 years in the manganese chemical market, we are delivering cutting-edge technologies that not only benefit the OEMs in their EV production but also contribute to a more sustainable future for consumers through lower carbon footprint vehicles.”

Jean-Thibault de Besombes, senior director of strategy and product management for advanced materials at Vibrantz.

This initiative positions Vibrantz to meet the growing demand for high-performing batteries and support the rapid adoption of cleaner energy solutions.

Driving force of high-purity manganese sulfate

The significance of high-purity manganese sulfate in lithium-ion batteries stems from its ability to improve the electrochemical properties of the battery. This transition metal offers a range of benefits:

  • Improved performance: Manganese-based cathodes deliver high energy density and excellent power output, leading to longer driving ranges and enhanced acceleration for EVs.
  • Safety enhancement: Manganese contributes to thermal stability, reducing the risk of overheating or thermal runaway, ensuring the safety of EVs and their batteries.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Abundant and relatively low-cost compared to other metals used in lithium-ion battery cathodes, manganese is an economically viable choice.
  • Sustainability: By reducing reliance on expensive and environmentally impactful materials, manganese-based cathodes align with the sustainable vision of the EV industry.

As the automotive industry accelerates electrification, HPMSM plays a vital role in addressing key challenges, paving the way for a more sustainable future.

Automotive and transportation, Glass

The challenge of designing safe, unique and energy-efficient cars is key for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Indeed, OEMs are in an ongoing race to distinguish their brands and products while adapting to stricter regulations. Consumers are also increasingly seeking ways to reduce their carbon footprint while enjoying more comfort and convenience in the cars and trucks they drive. This all means that glass manufacturers – a critical component in the vehicle value chain – must stay ahead of safety and sustainability trends. One of the many positive contributions of glass manufacturers in the vehicle space is the development of infrared (IR) reflective windshields that enable fuel savings and enhance the driving experience, especially in hot weather.

The emergence of IR reflective windshields

In response to the call for greener mobility, the automotive industry has embraced IR reflective windshields as an innovative solution to improve energy efficiency, enhance passenger comfort and comply with environmental regulations. These windshields are designed to reflect a substantial portion of IR radiation from the sun, significantly reducing the amount of heat entering the vehicle’s interior. As a result, the cabin remains cooler, reducing the need for air conditioning during hot summer days, and ultimately leading to fuel savings and lower carbon emissions.

“Our team draws on decades of experience producing silver pastes and additional high-performing products used to enhance automotive applications,” said Andre Noppe, vice president, glass coatings. “We work hand-in-hand with glass manufacturers to provide innovative solutions that help OEM’s achieve design, safety and sustainability goals.”

Innovation drives environmentally friendly transportation

IR reflective windshields offer many energy-efficient transportation benefits.

  • Energy savings: By reducing the need for air conditioning, IR reflective windshields contribute to improved fuel efficiency, making vehicles more economical to run.
  • Environmental sustainability: Lower fuel consumption results in reduced greenhouse gas emissions, helping combat climate change and promote a greener future.
  • Enhanced comfort: IR reflective windshields maintain a cooler interior temperature, offering a more enjoyable driving experience, especially during scorching summers.

Silver pastes play a crucial role

At the heart of IR reflective windshields lies a critical component – silver pastes. Renowned for its exceptional electrical conductivity and high reflectivity in the IR spectrum, silver is the ideal choice for these specialized coatings. Silver pastes are formulated with silver particles suspended in a liquid medium, ensuring optimal adhesion to the windshield’s glass surface.

During the manufacturing process, the silver paste is applied to the windshield using a screen-printing technique. Once applied, the windshield undergoes a drying and firing process in a high-temperature furnace. This process fuses the silver particles, creating a continuous, conductive metallic layer that connects with the coating of the windshield (called bus bars). The coating is then connected to the vehicle’s electric system through the support of the silver bus bars.

High-performing products with multifaceted benefits

Vibrantz has been instrumental in the development of conductive silver pastes for automotive glass, driven by evolving market demands like modern car designs, complex glass shapes, light-weighting for fuel efficiency and end-of-life vehicle regulations.

Compared to alternative materials like metal copper stripes, printed silver is gaining popularity due to its lighter weight and increased durability. Silver pastes can be applied in thin, uniform layers and are generally more resistant to corrosion, which can be an essential consideration for long-term windshield durability.

Additionally, printed silver pastes enhance sensors for track control, rain detection, distance control and other significant safety features. They enable defogging and defrosting in this crucial area for passengers to see clearly.

While energy-efficient transportation will continue to be a top priority for both manufacturers and consumers, more and more vehicles will be equipped with energy-saving technologies that help mitigate environmental impact while lowering the operating costs for drivers.

Pearls simplifies the colorant process by reducing the need for additional additives, minimizing the general impact on important properties of the end-use paint. Solid colorants will not dry out, thicken or sediment, even with low colorant consumption, increasing shelf life substantially even after being in the dispenser.

Due to their solid form and low dusting properties, Pearls are cleaner and more user-friendly than competing technologies, and the packaging is 100% recyclable.

Pearls innovation gains momentum at the European Coatings Show

After years of development and testing, Vibrantz officially introduced this disruptive technology at the European Coatings Show (ECS) in March 2023 in Nuremburg, Germany. Over the course of three days, hundreds of attendees gathered to watch machine demonstrations and learn about Pearls™ unique advantages. Our technical team was available to share insight, prove ease of use and answer any questions surrounding the latest innovation.

“We were thrilled to introduce this highly anticipated technology to ECS attendees. Glass

The shift in how people work has driven a change in commercial construction. Tenants are looking for increasingly specialized buildings for their unique needs and governments are calling for construction to be more environmentally friendly. The Performance Coatings team at Vibrantz is working with glass fabricators to find unique solutions for these challenges by refocusing our efforts on developing digital inks that provide qualities like reflectiveness, mirroring and luster to help commercial buildings differentiate from one another.

Bird-friendly building materials make headway in construction industries.

As the problem of bird-to-building collisions becomes more widely known, an increasing number of states, cities and municipalities are adopting legislation that recommends, and in some cases, requires, bird-friendly materials to be used on new construction and building renovations. With an estimated one billion bird fatalities annually from collisions, certain building materials can make a huge difference.

“Bird-safe glass typically is characterized by visual markers applied in a pattern. We work with glass fabricators to provide aesthetically pleasing inks for glass. Our digital inks can help lower bird collisions and improve energy efficiency due to their infrared reflective properties.”

– Pierre Plazonnet, digital technology manager for performance coatings.

Our customized solutions help you stand out and save money.

Flat glass is the industry standard for glass manufacturing in commercial real estate design and construction. This includes glass panes on building exteriors, glass doors and separators inside buildings and glass panes used for structural decoration such as along stairwells.

Glass fabricators commonly use screen-printed designs, effects and even pictures to differentiate buildings from one another. This can be costly due to the need for an ample supply of raw materials. It also becomes more difficult to produce different designs and effects quickly due to the need to constantly switch materials, resulting in a lower quality product.

We provide glass fabricators with alternative solutions for screen printing that provide cost savings and unique designs. Our digital inks offer flexibility in manufacturing runs to switch design or effects quickly and require fewer raw materials. The reduced amount of materials cuts down on storage costs and helps save you money and space.

From a finishing point of view, our inks can be used to achieve technical properties as well as create a wide variety of effects on glass, including:

  • Customized designs and patterns
  • Lines and dots using inkjet frit to support bird friendly glazing
  • Anti-reflective coatings
  • Decorative finishes like luster or etch
  • Functional coatings, such as those that reduce glare, mask selected areas or improve energy efficiency (i.e. NIR reflection or optical density)

More than just architectural glass.

We offer a wide variety of these materials to meet the needs of our customers in different industries, such as automotive glass, decorative glass, structural ceramics, dinnerware and porcelain enamel
